Bad Breath

Bad breath can extremely be embarrassing! I'm sure you can think of times when you've been a little too close to someone with bad breath for your own comfort - I know I have! Trying to avoid breathing too deeply when near a loved one is especially uncomfortable!

The morning is perhaps the most normal time to notice bad breath. It's a common problem and you may have heard it referred to as 'morning breath'. However, it's not always easy to notice when you have bad breath and as you can imagine people aren't going to be too forthcoming in telling you either!

How can you tell if your breath smells?

There's quite a simple method that you can use to work out what kind of shape your breath is in.

  • Make sure the back of your hand is clean. Don't use any scented soap!
  • Give the back of your hand a good lick (hmmm. well, it is clean after all!)
  • Rub your saliva around on the back of your hand a little and shake your wrist in the air so it dries just a little bit.
  • Now the moment of truth! Have a good smell of the back of your hand. If it doesn't small too good, then your breath's not in good shape.

Ketosis and bad breath

Unfortunately, while we try and get our body in shape on a low carb diet, our breath and general body odour is likely to suffer big time! This is due to the body producing molecules refered to as ketones. They're used to fuel parts of the body that would normally be fuelled by simple carbohydrates, such as glucose.

As you probably know, ketones can be a problem for our breath, our general body odor and lastly for anyone that dares to venture too close!

What can be done about it?

If you're following one of the better known low carb diet plans, there's no getting away from the fact that at some stage you're going to be producing ketones. You can't stop the ketones from being produced but you can attempt to neutralize the bad smell. I've found that mint is the most effective.

  • Use mint mouth spray.
  • Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day.

Unfortunately though, no amount of brushing, deodorant or mouth sprays will really help for any length of time. Why? Because these are external hygiene measures, and the real problem is that ketones are produced internally.
